Higher Education support

The financial support on offer for HE students can make studying at university-level very affordable. There are a number of grants and loans available.

Tuition Fee Loan

All eligible, full-time EU students can take out a student loan to cover the cost of tuition fees. Student loans are funded by the government and paid directly to your college or university by the Student Loans Company.   The maximum you can borrow depends on the fees charged by your university for your course. It’s not affected by your household income. Loans are not repaid until you start earning at least £21,000 per year, higher than the previous threshold. They are repaid in monthly instalments and payments are often taken automatically if you are an employee.

Assembly Learning Grant

The Assembly Learning Grant (ALG) provides financial support to help meet general living costs. It is paid in three instalments, one at the start of each term.  How much you get depends on your household income, and will be calculated by your Local Authority when you make your application.   The universities we work with also have Financial Contingency Funds, bursaries and other grants – you can find more information here:     All applications for financial help should be made as soon as possible online to Student Finance Wales (www.studentfinancewales.co.uk) or via your local authority if you live in Wales or Student Finance England (www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance) if you live in England.
