Budding photographers, journalists, editors and designers from a local Girlguiding group recently got their creative ideas down on paper with a little help from Coleg Gwent.
The group of 30 Guides from Rogerstone took part in evening meetings at Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus to design a magazine filled with charity pages, film reviews, fashion pages and arts and crafts, aimed at other Girlguide members.
Over four weeks the youngsters learnt how to use design software on the College’s Mac computers, drafted articles and produced pictures with the help of the College’s photography department.
The creative group were able to show off their new skills to parents and friends with their own copy of the magazine to take home.
Head of School of Art and Design Maria Retter said: “We were delighted to welcome Rogerstone Girlguides to the Campus. The group worked really hard and the finished magazine looked fantastic. All of the group were able to try out new skills with the College’s specialist equipment, and really get an insight into how publications are produced.”
Guide leader Gill Thomas said: “We were very grateful to Maria Retter and her team at Coleg Gwent for offering this facility to Girlguiding Rogerstone. The girls had a great time and were able to develop skills such as decision making, negotiation and team work in order to plan and produce their work, which supports the ethos of Girlguiding - Girls in the Lead. I'm sure the girls will be very proud of their magazine and they have earned a Girlguiding GO FOR IT Passion for Fashion award too.”
